Today is Stephen’s 41st birthday. It’s also his kidneys 6 month bday(was yesterday but still..). What a year he’s had. A year ago today he was waiting for a life-saving kidney, not knowing if he would make it another year. This birthday is special to us, because he’s healthy, he’s thriving, he’s happy. Tonight we’ll celebrate Stephen with my parents, a few friends, and of course our new sister, his donor(without her we would not be celebrating!). I know he’d rather be back in LA with his friends, but Stephen has one more hurdle to overcome next week-a hip replacement. From complications from high doses of a steroid he was negligently given several years ago, he ended up with deterioration in his right hip. He’s doing so well with his new kidney, that they’ve approved his hip surgery, which normally wouldn’t happen until a year post transplant. Hopefully it’s a quick recovery !! Please wish this guy a happy birthday 🎊 if you see him. 😘

5 weeks ago from yesterday, Stephen had his life saving kidney transplant. He is out and about-went to the gym this week, and now out to lunch. His kidney is doing its job, and his numbers are looking pretty good! His donor went back to work this week, can’t believe it.

Kidney function is working at 85%, when he went into surgery his old kidneys were functioning at 7%. We have to keep him healthy and clear of germs. Masks help! But if you see him out no touching!

Stephen is continuing to recover. His numbers are starting to look great. Creatinine and ureic acid both dropping, and his Kidney function is up. His coloring has improved and minus the surgical pain, has a lot more energy. He should be discharged tomorrow!

Give the Ultimate Gift of Life

We need your help. Something more than financial. Something extremely meaningful and life saving. We need you to spare a kidney for my brother Stephen. Stephen had failing health the last couple of years and we found out recently that he has a rare genetic disease known as Alport’s Syndrome. This x-linked genetic disease causes renal failure in males by the time they are 40. Stephen recently turned 40 in June and we are desperately fighting against time to help him locate a live kidney donor. Ideally we find him a donor before he has to start dialysis, which he isn’t far from. The donor list he is currently on, like all the other lists nation-wide, have a wait list of 10+ years. 10 years is time Stephen doesn't not have to wait.

Even if you are not a match for Stephen, you may be a match for someone else and can SAVE THEIR LIFE! Imagine that! Those of us who are able to volunteer to be a donor can literally save someone else’s life. Will you be a hero and use your super power of giving a life to someone else? I’ve included some information on what to expect around the donation process.

We are extremely lucky that Stephen’s blood type is AB+ which means he is a universal acceptor. He can receive a donation from all blood types-we just need to find a tissue match. We are heartbroken by his diagnosis, but hopeful for a life saving solution and appreciate any help our friends, families and even strangers can provide! To start the donation process at UCLA please fill out this form. If you are donating in Boston, please fill out the form here.

This is the information you will need for Stephen Unger. His date of birth is 6/28/78.
