If you have a combined income of $100k or more, you need a personal liability umbrella policy. This comes in increments of $1M & goes over your home, auto, landlord policies, etc., and protects your assets if a liability lawsuit against you exceeds the underlying limits. Example: you have $100k per person on your auto bodily injury & you hit Mr. Jones. He has $1M in total damages to him. In this case, your auto would pay $100k and you would owe out-of-pocket $900k. However, if you had an umbrella, your underlying auto would be required to have $250k per person; the auto would pay out 1st, then you would have the additional $1M umbrella to protect your assets.
