If you have ever been in a data breach, assume your Social Security number is already out there.

You cannot change your SSN.

So you lock down the places scammers use it.

Here are the 3 moves I would tell every family to do right now, for free.

1/ Claim your Social Security account

Create your my Social Security account so nobody else creates it for you.

2/ Freeze your credit

Freeze at all three bureaus. That blocks new credit in your name until you temporarily lift it.

3/ Get an IRS Identity Protection PIN

This helps stop someone from filing a tax return using your SSN.

If you already know your SSN has been exposed, add these.

4/ Block electronic access to your SSA record

Extra secure, but it makes changes harder for you too.

5/ Turn on E Verify Self Lock

Stops someone from using your SSN in E Verify for employment verification.

Identity theft is paperwork hell.

Spend 20 minutes locking it down now, or spend months proving you are you later.
