🛑 Just because your plan says “$20 copay” doesn’t mean everything at that doctor’s visit is $20. 😬

Your copay may cover the office visit, but tests, labs, X-rays, imaging, or other services can be billed separately AND may have their own copays, deductible and coinsurance.

Basically… you paid the cover charge, but the appetizers are extra. 💸😂

Before you say, “I have a $20 copay, I’m good!” ask:

👉 Is the test covered?
👉 Is there a separate cost?
👉 Does my deductible apply?
👉 Is the facility IN network?

Understanding your benefits BEFORE the appointment can save you from an unpleasant surprise in the mail. 📬👀

Your health insurance card is not a magic “everything is $20” card.

Health insurance in 20 seconds. Let’s break it down. 👇

💰 Premium: Your monthly bill to keep your insurance active.

💸 Deductible: What you may have to pay before your insurance starts sharing certain costs (a/k/a coinsurance kicking in). Coinsurance is a percentage where the insurance company says: “You pay some, we’ll pay some…” until you hit your out-of-pocket max (see below).

🩺 Copay: A set amount you pay for things like a doctor visit or prescription.

🚨 Out-of-pocket MAX: Your “OKAY, I’m done paying. That’s enough.” limit for covered IN network care that plan year.

And yes… all of these numbers matter.

Because choosing a health plan based only on the monthly premium is like buying a car based only on the cup holders. 😬

PSA with a little schedule update from your local homeschool mom + health insurance broker:

During the school year, Fridays are officially homeschool community days for my little family. 📚

This means the work phone stays at home because I’m choosing to be fully present with my kids and the other homeschool families we get to do this crazy life with.

I feel like I’m surviving the health insurance industry out of pure spite today. 🫠💁🏼‍♀️

Some days, health insurance is confusing, frustrating, and enough to make you question every life decision you’ve ever made.

But honestly, the ridiculousness is exactly why I do what I do. Insurance is complicated enough without having to decode it alone.

Y’ALL. I BROKE MY FOOT… BY STANDING UP. 🤦🏼‍♀️

The Monday after vacation requires a little maintenance.

First: Chiropractic adjustment. 🩻

Third: Pretending I remember all my passwords. 💁🏼‍♀️

My motivation is still somewhere on the interstate. 🛣️

After a road trip and hotel beds, my spine always needs a reboot so my chiro is a must first thing when I’m home.

I’m back in alignment.

After a few days unplugged, I’m back at work... physically anyway. The attitude is still taking the scenic route because my brain is still on vacation. 🌄

Here’s a reminder to take time to relax, unplug, and reset. 🫶 You won’t regret it.
