Last night I attended our local high school’s scholarship awards night. It is one of the most rewarding nights of the year to witness $198,000 given to Alcona High School students. $10,000 of which is given by Alcona Lodge #292!
But this was secondary to a conversation I had with a woman I haven’t seen in years. I had to apologize because her name escaped me, even though I knew I should have known her name.
After some pleasantry’s she said something that stopped me momentarily. “I will never forget what you told my son.”
“One day you will thank your mother”. She brought her son to see me about 12 years ago and encouraged him to open a Roth IRA. He was reluctant to contribute real money. That is when I pushed him and told him, “do this now and one day you will thank your mother”. That was 11-12 years ago. Since then he has married and was looking to buy a house according to this mother’s update, when he decided to check his account balance. He was stunned at the balance of more than $30,000! He then thanked his mom who reminded him to leave it and keep contributing.
Like most things in life financial success is little more than discipline.
Few things in my career are more rewarding than this conversation with an astute mother, glowing with the pride for her son, and her acknowledgement of me pushing him to do something good for his own benefit.
