Stopping to enjoy your life... that might be about as productive as it gets.

We spend so much time working, hustling, doing.

But now, I'm taking more time to enjoy the little moments of my life instead.

At this point, I’m much more interested in comfort than proving anything.

I want clothes that feel good, relationships that feel easy, plans I actually want to attend, and enough confidence to leave when I’m ready.

Maybe that’s the real midlife autumn era.

You stop clinging to things simply because they’ve always been there.

You become more willing to let go, make room, and settle into who you actually are.

Things that confused me at 25 are much clearer now.

If someone repeatedly shows you they’re unreliable, believe the pattern.

If every interaction leaves you exhausted, pay attention.

If someone only appears when they need something, notice that too.

Experience doesn’t make us immune to mistakes, but it does give us a much larger collection of evidence.

And I’ve become less interested in talking myself out of what I can plainly see.

That doesn’t mean becoming cynical.

There are wonderful people in the world.

People can change.

Everyone deserves grace sometimes.

But grace and endless excuses are not the same thing.

One of the quieter benefits of getting older is learning to trust your own observations.

You don’t need to turn every red flag into a research project.

Sometimes you already know.

And these days, I’m much more willing to listen to that little voice.

I don’t need a complicated fall bucket list.

I want to take a few walks when the leaves are beautiful.

Make something warm for dinner, cinnamon-y for dessert.

Call the people I keep meaning to call.

Maybe drive somewhere pretty just because we can.

Mostly, I want enough space in the month to actually notice it happening.

I don’t know who decided that fun has to begin late, but I would like to renegotiate.

Why can’t the concert start at 5?

Why can’t dinner reservations be at 5:30?

Why are we pretending 9 p.m. is an appropriate time to begin anything other than getting ready for bed?

I still like going places.

I still like having fun.

I would simply like the fun to happen earlier.

Give me an afternoon festival.

A matinee.

Happy hour.

An early dinner where we’re walking back to the car while the younger people are just arriving.

Perfect.

There’s something deeply satisfying about having a wonderful evening and still being home early enough to change into pajamas, wash your face, and watch an episode of something before bed.

We’ve had decades to perfect this.

The party can continue without us.

When I was younger, injuries had stories.

I played a sport. I did something adventurous.

Now someone asks what happened to my neck and I have to say, “Apparently I slept wrong.”

That’s it.

No exciting backstory.

No impressive athletic achievement.

I simply went to bed completely healthy and woke up unable to turn my head to the left.

One morning my shoulder decides it has had enough because my pillow was positioned incorrectly.

At least I got some sleep.

I spent so much of my younger life looking ahead.

Waiting for the weekend. The vacation. The next milestone.

The next stage when everything would somehow fall into place.

These days, I’m trying to catch myself when I start doing that. There will always be something next. Meanwhile, this day is happening right now.

And if today includes cool air, colorful trees, a good cup of coffee, and people I love, maybe I don’t need to be anywhere else just yet.

Remember when someone took a picture and we just smiled?

Nobody examined it from seven angles.

Nobody zoomed in.

Nobody took 46 nearly identical versions.

And absolutely nobody said, “Wait, delete that. My neck looks weird.”

We had no idea how carefree we were.

Now group photos require lighting negotiations, strategic positioning, camera height, and at least one person announcing that the picture absolutely cannot be taken from below.

But here’s what I’m trying to remember.

When I look at old photos, I rarely notice the things I worried about at the time.

I notice the people.

I notice where we were.

I remember how the day felt.

Twenty years from now, I suspect I’ll feel exactly the same about the photos I’m criticizing today.

So maybe we should take the picture.

Get in it.

Keep it.

Your neck is fine.

And even if it isn’t, nobody who loves you cares.

I used to admire women who seemed completely unconcerned with other people’s opinions.

I thought they possessed some extraordinary level of confidence.

Now I’m starting to suspect at least part of it was exhaustion.

Eventually, you simply run out of energy for things that don’t matter.

You’ve spent decades worrying.

Trying to keep everyone happy.

Wondering whether you said the right thing.

Replaying conversations.

Trying to meet expectations that seem to multiply every year.

Then one day you realize you have a finite amount of energy and you’d rather spend it somewhere useful.

On people you love.

On things that matter.

On yourself.

Maybe that’s one of the unexpected gifts of getting older.

You become more careful about where your attention goes.

It isn’t that you suddenly stop caring about everyone.

You just stop treating every opinion like an assignment you’ve been given.

And that actually feels pretty awesome.
