Here’s a chart of top tax rates going back to 1920, from a Bloomberg article this weekend on high earners investing beyond their 401(k).

A 401(k) defers your taxes, but the bill can come due at an inconvenient time. I often see retired families with other income sources forced to take required minimum distributions (RMDs) they don’t need, which can lead to a bigger tax bill.

Morning market update ☀️

Records are taking a breather — the S&P 500 and Nasdaq both closed at new highs yesterday, but futures are sliding this morning. The 10-year Treasury is back above 5.3%, a 24-year high, and Brent crude is over $100 again after Houthi attacks on Saudi targets.

Today: a $39B 10-year auction at 1pm ET, then FOMC minutes at 2pm from September's Fed hike.

Wednesday brings the minutes from September's Fed meeting — the one where they raised rates for the first time in three years — surrounded by a full week of Fed speakers. And here is the strange reality we are living in right now: the market is wrestling, not wrestling. The Nasdaq is at all-time highs while the 10-year Treasury yield hit 5.30% today — a level not seen in over twenty years. Somehow, both of those things are happening simultaneously.
