Use long lenses for more effective flower shots!

It can be tempting to use a wide-angle lens to capture a large swathe of floral color. However, this can lead to individual blooms being lost. Instead, try a telephoto lens to pick out a single flower (or small group of flowers). An added benefit is adding artistic blur to the background. :)

Water can be fun ... so many ways to capture it. One of my favorites is to blur waterfalls and rivers with long exposures.

You can capture silky smooth water (or even blurred clouds) by putting your camera on a tripod and using a long exposure. And if the light is too bright for a long exposure, you can either use a neutral density filter or wait until it gets a little darker (think dusk). Remember, photography is a patience game.

Burst mode can be your friend when taking action shots.

Looking for that perfect action or wildlife shot? Ensure that you capture it perfectly by using burst mode, which will take a series of shots, allowing you to pick the best one later.

Just remember to delete the unused photos later! :)

Simple but effective tip today ... use the volume button to snap a photo

Using the big white shutter button on your screen is easy and useful, but it also tends to introduce camera shake, making your photos blurry. Instead of snapping a photo with the on-screen shutter button, use the volume button!

iPhone: no modifications needed because it's pre-setup

Android: a few steps are necessary to set it up
a. Open your camera app
b. Open the camera settings
c. Tap on "Shutter type" then choose "Shutter Button"
d. Note: Android has many different "flavors" so the above are general guidelines and will get you close.

Sometimes subjects are more interesting when they're backlit. There is as much beauty in the darkness as there is in the light. Instead of looking directly at the person/thing you're trying to photograph, be aware of your surroundings, how the light not only hits your subject but the spaces around them.

By tapping directly on your screen, you can change the exposure from the background to the foreground or vice versa. Experiment!

Photographing kids is a lot of fun (but sometimes not). :).

One interesting technique is to place kids in an area that shows how little they are.

This generally means:
1. Keeping them at the bottom of the frame
2. Stand back to allow negative space around them.
3. Let kids be kids ... their free spirits will do all the work

Photography is all about patience.

One of the things I like to do is find pockets of light (or shadows) and wait for something to happen. Sometimes the combinations of life and light doesn't happen and you have to move on to the next potential opportunity. But sometimes everything lines up and you create something especially interesting.

“Patience is not the ability to wait, but the ability to keep a good attitude while waiting.” --- Anonymous

You've heard of the KISS principle, right? It applies to photography as well.

KISS ... Keep It Simple Stupid (or Silly, or any other variation). But the idea is the same. Keeping it simple. Too many details distract the viewer. A busy scene makes it hard to create a beautiful composition.

So before you take the shot, check the scene for any distracting elements. Move closer, or change your viewpoint, to remove unwanted objects from your photo.
