A bookkeeper is like your car mechanic - they maintain your car to make sure it is in tip top shape.

An accountant/CPA is like your GPS - they guide your car and tell you where to drive.

There are businesses who generate $1 million in revenue and profit $100k.

There are businesses who generate $500k in revenue and profit $200k.

Bigger doesn’t always equal better.

Do you know what your profit is?

If you are relying on your bank balance to tell you, it doesn’t show the full story and can actually be misleading.

A very common mistake I see in small business’s books - using their personal card for business expenses and then never logging the business expenses in their books.

Things happen and sometimes the personal card gets used for business. The most important part is making sure those business expenses are logged.

Your personal account does not show up in your business books, so unless you actively and intentionally record those business purchases, they will get missed.

This means your expenses are understated and your profit is overstated, which could lead to you paying more in taxes. This mistake can cost you!

One of the best perks about my business is that I can do it from pretty much anywhere!

It gives me so much more flexibility than a regular job would.

It means I get to visit family more often and for a longer time, because I get to set my own schedule and carve out work time as needed.

I don’t mind doing some work on vacations, because that means I get to extend my stay and enjoy quality time together, without feeling guilty.

While there is value in completely unplugging on a vacation sometimes (don’t worry, I take time for that too), there is also tremendous value in having the flexibility to see friends and family, and to enjoy life, as we should!

I am so grateful and I wouldn’t trade this for anything!

The other day, I was helping my mom with a project at her house.

We needed to tape down some tubing on the floor so no one would trip over it.

She said, “let me go get some of that duct tape you used to use in high school to make duct tape wallets, and see if it is still any good to use for this.”

I had completely forgotten that I used to make duct tape wallets!

They were very cool, if I do say so myself 😎 this was also when duct tape prom dresses were a thing!

I remember I made many models, and my goal aways was to hold as many cards as possible without being too bulky. I would cut down the tape with an exact-o knife to get it precise. Wish I had a pic of them!

That was also the very first Facebook business page I ever had. My friend made the page for me! I was intending to sell them at some point, but of course, I never actually used the page and I’m sure it has been taken down by now 😅

That was such a fun, random memory. Thanks, mom!

Guess I had the entrepreneurial spirit back then too.

What were your fun/random hobbies you had in high school?

P.S. the tape was still perfectly sticky!

If paying taxes to the IRS felt like a lot this year, now is the perfect time to set up a system to combat that.

Here are two ways you can make it feel less bad next year:

1. Open a savings account at your current bank and setup an auto-transfer of money each month into that account. Better yet, open a high-yield savings account for this.

That money will be out of sight and out of mind, and it won’t feel like such a big hit again next year, because you have been saving for it.

2. You can schedule payments to the IRS, so you will be paying down your future tax bill throughout the year, which will reduce or eliminate the hit to your bank account when the time comes.
