It is here, from October 15th to December 7, AEP (annual enrollment period) for Medicare.
If you're on Medicare, now is the time to check and see if your drug plan is the best one for you. That is simple to do, just google Medicare part D comparisons and it will take you to the SHIPP site, you can enter the drugs you take and the drugstore you use and it will give you the best plan for you. Or you can go down to the senior center and they will have a volunteer there to help you.
It is also the time, if you want to enroll in a Medicare advantage. You can do so or if you wish to switch Medicare advantage plans if there are some available in your area, now would be the time.
However, this is not a time that you can switch Medicare supplement plans without underwriting unless you're in your personal open enrollment which would be the six months surrounding you turning 65 and signing up for part B Medicare.
You can change Medicare supplement plans anytime of the year you choose as long as you can qualify through underwriting. On the good side, qualifications are not as tough because Medicare is the primary and the Medicare supplement will be secondary in your health care cost.
Going forward, in my opinion as well as many others, it is best to have a Medicare supplement and a standalone drug plan. Of the Medicare supplements, plan G is the best value. Make sure if you compare plans, you're comparing the same plan with another. For example make sure you're comparing a plan G with a plan G. All plan G's pay the same benefits, as regulated by Medicare, regardless of the company. That goes for the other nine plans as well so there's no need to pay more just so you can have a name brand.
If your premiums have gotten to high I would suggest trying to change plans on your Medicare supplement but if your health has fallen, the next best thing in my opinion would be a Medicare advantage.
A Medicare advantage is not a Medicare supplement, it does not supplementing your Medicare benefits it is just another way of you receiving your Medicare benefits, but the advantage over original Medicare is there is a stop loss with a Medicare advantage and there is not a stop loss with original Medicare. That simply means with a Medicare advantage, there will be a maximum that you could spend regardless of your medical needs per year.
