Here in east Tennessee, it seems like you always have to be on the lookout for mold. Since it thrives in wetter environments, mold can rear its ugly, spore-filled little head any time of the year here.

So does your insurance cover it?

Since mold typically doesn't occur quickly or out of the blue, it's likely the result of a slow leak somewhere you can't see. Unfortunately, slow leaks typically are not covered by homeowner's insurance.

So what can you do to prevent mold damage in the first place?

1. Fix leaky pipes, roofs, and faucets promptly!

2. Use dehumidifiers to lower humidity levels, especially in basements and crawl spaces.

3. Increase air circulation by opening windows or using fans.

4. Clean areas prone to moisture, like bathrooms and basements, regularly.

5. Clean gutters regularly to prevent water buildup.

Do you live with someone who doesn't drive your car, but your insurance company still wants them to be listed on your policy?

Insurance companies don't want someone who has regular access to your vehicle to not be listed as a driver on your policy. This means you have a couple options.

If they NEVER drive your car, excluding them as a driver is probably fine. To clarify, that doesn't mean you don't say anything to your insurance company about them living in the house. It means they're listed as someone who lives in the household but has no coverage if they were to drive your car.

If they drive your car occasionally, you'll either need to list them as a driver on your policy, or your insurance company might be satisfied if you can prove they're insured with another company.

This scenario can sometimes come up with roommates or with extended family members who live together.
