Memorial Day was originally called “Decoration Day” after the Civil War. Families would gather to place flowers, wreaths, and flags on the graves of fallen soldiers. It was never meant to just be another long weekend. It was meant to remember sacrifice.

Today, we honor the men and women who gave their lives serving this country. The ones who never came home. The families who carried that loss for the rest of their lives.

Freedom is expensive. Every generation before us has been reminded of that reality.

So while many of us spend today with family, grilling outside, traveling, or enjoying the unofficial start of summer, take a few moments to stop and remember why this day exists in the first place.

Because somewhere, someone gave up everything so the rest of us could keep living freely.
