is a small non-profit charity created in 2009 by two caring persons: a grandmother (Fran) and her granddaughter (Sam). Together they decided that they could help children and teach children about helping other children. Along with raising funds, Halo raises awareness about needy local children and those in nearby Haiti. Initially HALO focused on three areas: providing nutritional supplements for b
abies in Haiti; providing clothes, toys and goods for children in homeless shelters; and providing gifts for underprivileged children during the holiday season. Hoping that Sam (now age 14) would learn the satisfaction that comes with helping others, Fran arranged for HALO’s work to be done, to the extent possible, by Sam. These days, more young people have joined Sam on a HALO’s “Junior Board,” and are committed to HALO’s mission to help those in need. Over time, the Junior Board has added new activities, including assisting children that have been abused, abandoned or neglected in the Miami/Dade area. Through community efforts, HALO has obtained and provided books and games to caretakers of such children; and provided badly needed household and toiletry items to young adults—at Casa Valentina and Emmaus’s Place—who have “aged out” of the foster care system. We also have purchased school supplies, snacks and other needed items for the Barnyard, a community center in Coconut Grove which provides free after school care to children with domestic and financial hardships. We provide 100% of donations to the children. Any administrative costs are underwritten by the board of directors. For more information contact:
