On Sept. 3, 1981, "The Spawn of Fashan" roleplaying game made its debut at the Denvention II World Science Fiction Convention in Denver. Though only 17 copies were sold, magazine reviews ripping, roasting, and praising the rulebook turned "Spawn" into a global mystery and industry phenomenon.

After four decades of limited or no availability, creator Kirby Lee Davis released this 40th anniversary edition presenting "The Spawn of Fashan" in its original format, along with the forward to the 1998 reprints, a new look at the game’s humorous history, a long-missing table of contents and index, and other examples of the author’s singular wit.

Check it out! This was unexpected, but very cool. I thought the bestseller saga was effectively over, but all three books in “The World As I See It” trilogy leaped several million places late Aug. 14 on Amazon.com’s overall book sales chart. Their positions there are still not that impressive, but in their best performance category, the three books jumped several hundred spots to land in sequence in the top 30. I don’t know why, and I have no idea how long this will last, but it’s cool. I’ve included their individual charts in the comments so you may see their other categories and overall ranks. You may check these for yourself at Amazon’s product pages (remembering that Amazon updates their charts every few hours) or, later today, at kirbyleedavis.com. I’d do it now, but I need to get some sleep before I see “Nobody 2” this morning…

This is a fun one! Since I basically set the rules with this series, I’ve adapted this “First lines” to cover the last two paragraphs in the first chapter of “Crimson Destiny,” the fourth and last novel in The Jonah Cycle. And since it’s a short chapter, I’m including the first one here! Through this adventure, readers who have mastered the first three books in this Christian fiction series will recognize a return in style to book one, “The Prophet and the Dove.” They might see they’re guided by the same narrator — which will strike home when they reach that last line...
