Preparing for an exit is really preparing for freedom.

Decide your number. Learn what your business is worth today. Build it so it can run without you.

Do that and you get to choose. Sell on your own terms whenever you want, if you ever want. Or stay because you love it, knowing you could walk anytime.

Most owners who build that find they're in no hurry to leave at all.

Imagine this. Three months from now, you take one full week off. Completely unplugged. No calls, no email, no checking in.

Then you watch what breaks.

That's good information. Every wobble points at a process that lives only in your head.

You turn each one into a system or a trained person. Then you take two weeks. Then a month.

Repeat until the business grows while you're away. That's the business that's worth something, to a buyer and to you.

Start by putting one unplugged week on the calendar.

"My business is doing great, so it'd be easy to sell."

Maybe. But ask one question first: could it run for a month without you?

If the honest answer is no, a buyer would really be taking on a job that only works while you're there. That's hard to sell at a price that would let you step back.

The more the business depends on you, the less it's worth to someone else. Good news: fixing that pays you back long before any sale ever happens.

I get about a dozen emails a week asking if I've thought about selling my business.

Most owners get some version of that call too. Sometimes even an offer shows up out of nowhere, with a real number attached, and suddenly they're staring at it with no idea whether it's good, bad, or life changing.

Here's what I've noticed. The panic comes from uncertainty. You've never decided what a good price would look like for you, so you can't weigh the one in front of you.

So the fix is to decide now, while nothing is on the line.

Two numbers are worth knowing long before anyone knocks: the price that would make you consider selling, and an honest sense of what the business is worth today.

The space between them is the work. And even if you never sell, closing that gap builds something you could sell if you ever wanted to. That option alone is worth a lot.

What would your number be? Most owners have never written it down.

A question worth sitting with this weekend.

If you stepped away for a full week, what would stop moving?

Whatever you just pictured, that's where decisions are stacking up on you. Those are the spots where the people closest to the work either don't have the authority to decide, or don't know the limits they're allowed to work inside.

Adding AI only makes that pile taller and faster. The fix is giving your team real outcomes to own, with clear limits, so the work keeps moving whether you're at your desk or not.

If decisions are stacking up and AI has made the pile taller, let's talk. We'll look at how your team, your systems and your AI fit together. Reply here, or book a free systems review.

"I can't hand this off, nobody will do it right."

I hear this one a lot, and I get it. When every decision has run through you for years, letting go feels reckless.

So don't hand over everything. Hand over one thing. Pick a dollar amount someone can approve without asking you. Start small. Raise it as trust grows.

Handing over a decision feels like losing control. In practice it trades a dozen tiny decisions for the few that actually need you, and gives your evenings back.

Small limits, slowly widened, are how a team learns to carry weight.

Quick experiment for this week.

Next time someone asks you "what should I do?", ask back: "What would you do?"

If the answer's reasonable, let them run with it, even if it's not exactly how you'd do it. A few small mistakes are the price of a team that can finally decide without you.

Decisions start leaving your desk the moment you stop making every one of them.

Added a few AI tools lately and somehow feel busier than before? You're not imagining it.

Here's the pattern. Every AI tool spits out drafts, answers and options, and each one still needs someone to review it or decide what happens next. If that someone is always you, you've just hired a handful of interns who all report to one desk. The line outside your door only gets longer.

The way out is to build one team, people and AI together. The AI drafts and sorts. A trained person decides inside the limits you set. You stay in the calls that actually need an owner.

I walked through the whole idea in a short video, why AI piles onto the owner and what to build instead. Give it a watch.

For a long time I was the bottleneck in my business. Every decision ran through me. I'd watch work pile up waiting on a yes or a no, and stepping away for a day meant things stalled.

What changed was simple. The people closest to the work started making the calls, inside limits I'd set. AI drafts and sorts in the background. I only see what truly needs an owner.

It turns out the real win came from no longer being the only one allowed to decide.

What's one decision you'd love to get off your plate?

10/02/2026

"My business is finally running on AI. I should feel less stressed, not more."

I hear versions of this all the time now. Here's what's actually happening.

AI is one of the best tools we've ever been handed. It can lift what one person gets done to something remarkable. But it can only carry the easy weight. The judgment, the decisions, and the toll of both stay with you. When your output climbs ten times over, so does that weight.

You're not doing it wrong. You just need limits and rules built in, on purpose. Use AI deliberately, protect your hard stops, and it gives you back time and energy instead of draining them.

Capacity is only a gift if it leaves you with more life to actually live.
