The image below is a close-up of the entrance to the APES classroom in the HPA Energy Lab in a new 3D model. This shot is particularly beautiful because the rest of the lab can be seen in the reflection by the door's glass. The second picture shows the rest of the textured dynamic 3D mesh compiled from photographs of the area.

The 3D model of Isaacs Art Center (http://isaacsartcenter.hpa.edu/) is in the final stage of refinement! The CAD software featured below is Autodesk 3ds Max, which allows me to edit polygons without losing the original mesh texture (created using Capturing Reality). Even better, Autodesk Students is free for students. More updates to come!

Hi all,

My name is Zoe McGinnis, and I am the founder of Project Expanded Reality. I am a 17-year-old high school student from Kauai, Hawaii. I currently attend Hawaii Preparatory Academy (HPA) as a boarding student.

When I applied to HPA at the age of thirteen, I had never been to the HPA campus, or even visited the island of its location. I had neither the time nor the financial means to visit before committing to HPA, so my first time on campus was when I moved into the dorms. Luckily, I fell in love HPA instantly, and have had an incredible four years here.
However, for some, the experience of moving to a rural town in Hawaii (where the nearest town is not accessible by foot or bike) is jolting. This is why I created Project Expanded Reality. Now, prospective students can get a sense of what attending HPA is like by viewing the campus in virtual reality.

An insight into our process:
Featured below is a screenshot of a mesh being made with Capturing Reality. We establish reference points manually by choosing a point that appears in the scene and identifying it in many pictures. From there we compile a 3D model of the scene and optimize the model's colors and structure.
