I just finished a book I keep thinking about: The Happiness Experiment by Carl B. Barney.

After a close call with his own life, he started giving portions of what would have been inheritances to people while he was still here to see it. He watched what it did for them, and what it did for him.

That lands close to the work we do. Almost every plan we build is written for a day none of us wants to think about. But some of your legacy does not have to wait for that day.

Helping a daughter with a down payment. Paying for a grandchild's first year of college. Funding the trip your parents keep putting off. Done thoughtfully, with the tax side handled, those gifts can happen while you are in the room.

The rest of the plan still matters, and it should be airtight. But if there is something you would like to see your money do for your kids in your lifetime, that is worth a conversation too.

Most people think their insurance is their asset protection plan. It is a backstop, not a plan.

Homeowners and auto policies have limits. A bad car accident, a guest hurt on your property, a tenant in your rental with a lawyer - those can run past the limit fast, and everything past it comes out of what you own.

A few things worth looking at this fall:

- Whether your liability limits still match what you have built
- Whether an umbrella policy makes sense on top of them
- How your rental or farm property is titled, and whether it should sit in an entity
- Whether the retirement accounts you are counting on already have protection you are not using

The point is not fear. It is that the wealth you spent thirty years building should not be exposed by a form nobody has looked at since 2011.

The day your child turns 18, you become a legal stranger to them.

It catches parents completely off guard. You raised them, you may still be paying their tuition - and yet the hospital can decline to tell you anything, and the bank can decline to talk to you at all. Legally, they're an adult now, and you have no automatic right to their medical or financial information.

It matters most in the moment you'd least want to be arguing about paperwork: a car accident on the way back to campus, a health scare during finals week.

Three documents fix it, and they take very little time:

- A HIPAA authorization, so doctors can speak with you
- A healthcare power of attorney, so someone can make medical decisions if your child can't
- A financial power of attorney, so bills and accounts don't freeze up

If you just sent a kid off to college, put this on the list before the semester gets away from you.

Exciting News!

Sowell Management, the firm that handles the behind-the-scenes investment work for our wealth management clients, has launched an Advanced Planning Group. It is the estate, tax and legacy planning work JR and I have spent our careers on, now built into the platform so advisors and families across the country can reach it too.

In plain terms: the planning we already do for you is now available to other financial advisors and the families they serve. This came out of a real partnership, and out of Sowell seeing the way our clients here are taken care of.

What it does not mean: any change for you. Quraishi Law & Wealth is right where we have always been, same team, same office, same people answering the phone. Your family is still who we get up for. If anything, this puts more resources behind the work we do for you.

The 401(k) you left behind is still yours.

Most people change jobs several times in a career, and the retirement account usually stays put. Out of sight, out of mind. Then one day there are four old accounts at four different companies, and nobody - including you - is looking at any of them.

What that costs you:

- Investments nobody has rebalanced in a decade
- Fees you never agreed to and can't see
- Beneficiary forms naming someone from a life you no longer live
- No way to tell whether all of it, added together, is actually enough

You can't plan around money you've lost track of. Pull your old statements together, find out what you actually own, and decide on purpose whether to consolidate.

Your tax return is a receipt. It is not a plan.

By the time your accountant hands you a finished return in April, almost every decision that mattered is already locked in. The year is over. All that's left is reporting what happened.

The decisions that actually move your tax bill happen now, in the fall, while there's still time to act:

- Whether converting part of a traditional IRA to a Roth makes sense in a lower-income year
- Whether to realize gains or harvest losses before December 31
- Whether your withholding is going to leave you with a surprise - the third-quarter estimated payment was due September 15
- Whether charitable giving should happen this year or next

None of that can be fixed in April. If nobody has looked at your tax picture since your last return was filed, this is the season to change that.

A lot of what I do isn't for the person sitting in my office. It's for their kids, five years later.

The call I get most often is from an adult child whose parent just had a stroke or a bad fall. They need to pay the bills, deal with insurance, maybe sell a car. And they can't do any of it, because the paperwork that would have let them was never signed.

A power of attorney only works if it's signed while your parent can still understand what they're signing. After that, it's a courtroom and a judge, and it takes months.

You don't have to solve all of this at once. Ask your mom or dad three questions:

- Do you have a power of attorney, and where is it?
- Who's allowed to talk to your doctors?
- If I had to pay your bills next month, would I know where the accounts are?

It's an uncomfortable ten minutes. It saves your family a very bad year.

If the answers come back fuzzy, that's a normal place to start — and it's a lot easier to fix now than later.

Here's a question that stumps almost everyone: if something happened to you tomorrow, could your spouse get into your email?

Not your bank — the bank has a process. Your email. Because that's where every password reset goes. And your phone, because that's where the security codes land.

Families come in with a will, a trust, everything signed and in order, and still spend months locked out of photos, subscriptions that keep billing, a small business account nobody can reach, sometimes crypto that's just gone.

Writing your passwords on a sticky note isn't the answer either. Most accounts text a code to your phone, and if that phone is shut off, the list doesn't help.

This weekend, do one small thing: make a list of the accounts that matter and where the phone and the codes live. Then check whether your email provider has a "legacy contact" setting — most do, and it takes about two minutes to turn on.

If your plan doesn't mention digital accounts at all, that's worth a look next time we talk.
