Payroll has a lot of terms that sound similar but mean very different things. Let's clear a few up.
Contractor vs. Employee
The difference isn't just a title. It affects taxes, benefits, legal liability, and how you handle their pay. Misclassifying a worker can lead to back taxes and penalties. When in doubt, get it right from the start.
Biweekly vs. Semi-Monthly
Biweekly means every two weeks (26 pay periods a year). Semi-monthly means twice a month (24 pay periods a year). They sound the same, but your payroll calendar, cash flow, and tax deposits work differently for each.
Gross Pay vs. Net Pay
Gross pay is what an employee earns before deductions. Net pay is what they take home. Knowing the difference matters when you're budgeting for labor costs.
Getting these right keeps your business protected and your employees paid accurately.
