Want to attract great employees? Give them a reason to stay.

A competitive salary matters but so do the benefits that come with the job.

Health insurance, dental, vision, life, accident, and other supplemental benefits can give employees something just as valuable as compensation: peace of mind.

For small business owners, building a benefits package can feel complicated. What should you offer? What fits your budget? What will actually matter to your employees?

There isn't a one-size-fits-all answer.

The right benefits strategy should work for your team, your business, and your bottom line.

I help business owners understand their options and build coverage that makes sense for their unique needs.

Have questions about benefits for your business? Let's talk.

Small business owner? Your health insurance doesn't have to be one-size-fits-all.

You may have more options than you realize, including:
✔️ ACA Marketplace plans
✔️ Small group coverage
✔️ Family coverage
✔️ Employee health benefits
✔️ Supplemental coverage

But here's the catch: don't just look at the monthly premium.

Your deductible, out-of-pocket maximum, provider network, and actual healthcare needs all matter when choosing a plan.

And when you're running the business, there's no HR department to call.

That's where I come in.

If you're a small business owner or self-employed and want to know what options make sense for you, send me a message.

Think your health insurance protects you from surprise medical bills? Here’s something you should know.

The No Surprises Act was created to protect patients from certain unexpected out-of-network medical bills - especially in emergencies and some situations where you don’t have a choice of provider.

That’s a big win for consumers. But the rules around healthcare billing and enforcement continue to evolve.

For my self-employed and 1099 clients, this is especially important. When you don’t have an employer’s HR department helping you sort through a confusing medical bill, you need to know what your coverage does and doesn’t protect you from.

That’s one of the reasons I’m here. I want my clients to feel confident about their coverage - not confused when they actually need to use it.

Save this post and send me a message if you have questions about your health insurance.

One thing I always tell my clients to check before choosing a health plan? Your prescriptions.

A plan might have a great monthly premium, but if your medications aren’t covered - or come with a higher copay - it could end up costing you more than you expected.

Before you enroll, check:
✔️ Are your prescriptions covered?
✔️ What tier are they on?
✔️ What will you pay?
✔️ Do you have to use a specific pharmacy?

Don’t just ask, “How much is my monthly premium?”

Ask, “What will this plan actually cost me based on the healthcare I use?”

That’s the number that matters.

Losing job-based coverage is a qualifying life event.

That means you have a Special Enrollment Period - typically 60 days from the date you lost coverage - to get into a marketplace plan.

Most people don't know the window exists until it's already closing.

Here's what you actually need to figure out before you pick a plan: your estimated annual income, your out-of-pocket maximum tolerance, and which providers you need in-network.

Those three things narrow your options faster than any plan-filter tool will.

Drop a question below or send me a message - I'll walk you through it.

Your deductible and out-of-pocket maximum are NOT the same thing.

Your deductible is what you typically pay toward covered care before your insurance starts sharing more of the cost.

Your out-of-pocket maximum is the most you’ll pay for covered, in-network care during your plan year before your insurance covers 100% of those covered costs.

And here’s why it matters: don’t choose a plan based on the monthly premium alone.

A plan that looks affordable each month could leave you with a much bigger bill if something unexpected happens.

When we compare plans, I look at the whole picture - premium, deductible, out-of-pocket maximum, and what you can realistically afford.

If you’re self-employed and have questions about your options, I’m happy to help.

Choosing between a PPO and an HMO can feel confusing - especially when you’re paying for your own health insurance.

I talk about this a lot with my self-employed clients, and the truth is: there isn’t one plan that’s right for everyone.

A PPO may give you more flexibility to choose your doctors and see specialists without referrals, but you’ll typically pay more for that freedom.

An HMO can help keep your monthly premium lower, but you’ll generally need to stay within the plan’s network and get referrals for specialist care.

Neither option is “better.” It really comes down to how you use your healthcare.
Do you see the same doctors regularly?
Do you want more freedom to choose your providers?
Are keeping your monthly costs down a priority?

These are the questions I look at with my clients to help them find coverage that actually fits their needs.

If you’re trying to figure out which option makes sense for you, send me a DM.

Losing a major client is stressful enough.

If that change also means you lose qualifying health coverage, it may open a 60-day Special Enrollment Period to enroll in an ACA Marketplace plan.

Many self-employed people assume they have to wait until Open Enrollment. Often, they don't.

The key is whether you've experienced a qualifying life event - not simply a change in income or the loss of a client.

Have questions about your options? Let's talk.

Every health plan starts to look the same after a while.

Before Open Enrollment, focus on these three things:

• Know the deadline. Miss Open Enrollment without a qualifying life event, and you may have to wait until next year for coverage.
• Understand Special Enrollment. Losing coverage, getting married, having a child, or moving can open a 60-day enrollment window.
• Don't choose based on premium alone. A lower-cost Bronze plan can end up costing more if you need frequent care.

The right plan depends on your health, your budget, and your expected healthcare needs.

Most self-employed people choose a health plan on their own.

They compare a few options and hope they picked the right one.

Sometimes a group plan makes more sense. Sometimes an individual marketplace plan is the better value.

The key is comparing both before you enroll.
