Houston business owners: if a new truck, machine or office buildout is on your list, the next 11 weeks matter.

In 2026, most business equipment can be deducted in full the year you start using it, thanks to 100% bonus depreciation and a $2.56 million Section 179 limit. The catch is that it has to be ready to use by December 31. Paying in December isn't enough if it isn't installed until January.

Our plain-English guide covers vehicles, the Texas franchise tax change and a year-end checklist:

How 100% bonus depreciation and the $2.56 million Section 179 limit work in 2026, the placed-in-service deadline, vehicle rules, and when buying doesn't pay.

Houston parents and grandparents: if helping family is on your list this year, December 31 matters.

In 2026, you can give up to $19,000 to each person you choose, and a married couple can give $38,000, without filing a gift tax return. Paying a grandchild's tuition directly to the school doesn't count toward that limit at all. And in Texas, gifts from community property are generally treated as half from each spouse.

Our plain-English guide covers the limits, 529 plans, which assets to give, and a simple year-end checklist:

The 2026 gift tax rules in plain English: the $19,000 annual exclusion, the $15 million lifetime exemption, 529 superfunding, tuition gifts and Form 709.

Houston families: it's open enrollment season, and many of you are staring at the same question. Should we pick the high-deductible plan with the HSA, or stick with the PPO?

For 2027, you can put up to $9,000 into a family HSA ($4,500 self-only). When it comes out of your paycheck, you skip federal income tax and Social Security and Medicare tax on that money. And since Texas has no state income tax, the federal savings are the whole story here.

It isn't right for everyone, though. If you expect big medical bills next year, a PPO can still come out ahead.

Our plain-English guide walks through the numbers and a simple checklist:

Should you pick an HSA-eligible health plan for 2027? New HSA limits, the 2026 law changes, payroll tax savings and when a PPO still makes more sense.

Thinking about a move between the U.S. and Australia, or already made one?

Both countries can tax you, and they don't always agree on what counts as a retirement account, an investment fund or a trust. A few examples:

- Americans living in Australia still file U.S. tax returns every year.
- Leaving Australia can trigger capital gains tax on investments, even if you don't sell anything.
- A Roth IRA that's tax-free in the U.S. may not be tax-free in Australia.

We put together a plain-English 2026 guide covering taxes, retirement accounts, estate planning and insurance, plus a checklist for your move:

Houston parents: your kids probably have a new account you've never logged into.

On October 1, the U.S. Treasury automatically opened a Trump Account for nearly every child under 18 with a Social Security number. Before you can manage it, or before grandparents or your employer can add money, you have to claim it in the official Trump Accounts app.

If your child was born in 2025 or later, claiming it (and making the pilot election) is how you get the $1,000 Treasury contribution.

One caution: only use the app linked from TrumpAccounts.gov. Expect scam texts offering to "activate" accounts for a fee.

We put together a plain-English guide with a 529 comparison and a simple checklist:

Houston crypto holders, this one's worth five minutes before the holidays.

When you sell part of your crypto, the IRS assumes you sold your oldest coins first unless you say otherwise. For many long-time holders, those are the coins with the biggest taxable gain.

For 2026, the IRS is letting investors choose which coins they sold just by keeping good records. That flexibility ends December 31. And this year your exchange's tax form will start showing cost basis for many sales.

We put together a plain-English guide with a simple example and a year-end checklist:

FIFO is the default, but you can pick which crypto lots you sell. Here's how the 2026 rules work, what 1099-DA now reports, and what changes after December 31.
