Our brief history.
Houston Westside Investments LLC isn’t the entity that we initially started with. Portage Bay Investments LLC is the entity that we set up back in 2017 when we started out investing in the local Houston, TX real estate market. This is the entity that we used to buy and renovate our first ever property in West Houston, near the energy corridor. Since then we have changed the focus of this entity to handling our various marketing efforts, but the original plan for this entity will continue, which is to serve as an investment vehicle for renovating and reselling real estate properties.
Marketing functions currently funded by Portage Bay Investments LLC will gradually shift over to Houston Westside Investments (which goes to market to prospective sellers as Houston Westside Home Buyers). In fact, we do not currently overtly advertise the name Portage Bay Investments LLC, and do not plan to going forward.
One of the lessons learned from our first flip, and in the period since completing it, is that it is absolutely critical that we work directly with sellers. We cannot simply outsource this key aspect of the business to wholesale buyers, as attractive as that sounds at times. We need to be able to offer creative solutions to meet sellers needs, as not every deal is the same, and not every seller has the same needs. We are also not huge fans of the wholesale model as a primary business objective, as we feel that too many of the deals simply do not get completed, leaving the seller hanging as a consequence. Certainly we don’t mind assigning properties to friends and colleagues periodically, but we don’t feel that this should be the goal. We want to buy the houses, and actually do something with them - even if only minor.
It is our goal to create a very local brand with a neighborhood feel. We want to be known in our little communities, in those zip codes where we focus our efforts, as those guys down that street that buy and renovate houses. And we want to offer value in doing so. Our tag line is Local Investors Offering Real Solutions. We want to make our neighborhoods a little bit better, and not just from a property value standpoint - we do take pride in helping families by providing good, safe and (hopefully) attractive homes to live in. There has to be some win-win solutions involved, otherwise it doesn’t make sense for us to invest in.
