A Look Behind the Curtain
Two very special personal injury attorney clients of mine — recently invited to serve as the keynote speakers at the NSSTA Conference — shared a perspective on structured settlements that stopped me in my tracks and has stayed with me ever since:
“Robin is not just our settlement consultant… she's our General Contractor.”
And I realized — they're exactly right.
For 30 years, I’ve never seen my role as simply providing structured settlement quotes. Those are tools — not the work itself.
The work is much bigger.
It’s stepping into the lives of families at one of the most difficult moments they will ever face… and helping bring order, clarity, and direction to what can feel overwhelming.
Much like a general contractor, my role is to:
• Understand the full picture — the family, their needs, their fears, their goals
• Coordinate the right professionals — trust attorneys, trustees, insurance advisors, financial resources.
• Navigate critical systems — Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, disability benefits.
• Anticipate future needs — education planning, long-term care, income stability
• Design and implement a plan — a blueprint that often supports a family for life.
This week alone, that meant:
• Helping a widow secure appropriate educational resources for her son with special needs.
• Coordinating a trust and structured settlement to plan for his ADA eduation, while ensuring his future benefits are protected.
• Bringing in an insurance professional to stabilize the family’s healthcare coverage.
• Researching future college costs to thoughtfully plan for her daughter’s education.
This is what “settlement planning” should look like.
Because while the lawsuit may be coming to a close… the family’s life is just beginning to rebuild.
And they deserve more than a quote.
They deserve a plan, a blueprint often for Life.
