When you or a family member becomes eligible for TRICARE For Life (TFL) — the program that works with **Medicare Part A and B to cover costs — that coverage only applies to the person with Medicare. Other family members stay in their current TRICARE plan. Turning 65 doesn’t trigger a qualifying life event for the Medicare‑eligible individual, but it does for other family members eligible for TRICARE.

Welcoming a new baby? First add your newborn to DEERS (within 90 days in the U.S. or 120 days overseas). Once in DEERS, your child is either automatically enrolled in a TRICARE plan or must be enrolled manually depending on sponsor status. Don’t forget to verify coverage with your regional contractor to avoid delays or denied claims.
