Machine room-less (MRL) elevators look great on paper. They can save valuable square footage and improve overall building efficiency, making them an attractive option during the design phase.

However, those space savings can come with trade-offs. Maintenance access, serviceability, and long-term operational challenges can make MRL systems less convenient and more problematic than expected.

When specifying elevator systems, it's important to look beyond the initial space savings and consider the full lifecycle of the equipment. Good design isn't just about maximizing usable space, it's about balancing efficiency, maintainability, and long-term performance.

This scene from Yellowstone really resonated with me while watching a rerun last night.

I've seen firsthand what happens when leadership runs from difficult conversations instead of leaning into collaboration. The best leaders don't fear new ideas or different perspectives—they invite them. They challenge assumptions, work through disagreements, and find solutions that are fair, practical, and move everyone forward.

Blame is easy. Collaboration takes courage. Accountability takes character.

Those are the kinds of leaders and organizations that earn lasting respect.
