Not True!! If you do not have what is called Credible Insurance coverage ( ie employer coverage) you need can sign up for Medicare 3 months prior to your 65Th birthday with an effective date of the 1st of your birth month. You also have until 3 months after your 65th birthday to sign up for Medicare with no penalties. After that, you will pay a penalty.

So the answer to this is.... it depends....Most people sign up for Medicare Part A since it is premium free ( there are instances where this is not the case) and wait to sign up for Medicare Part B (to avoid the monthly premium) until they are ready to retire and losing their employer based insurance coverage. No it is not...Most people only pay the Medicare Part B premium monthly. But there are also Part A&B deductables, which are generally covered by a Medicare Advantage plan. ( Part C)..Let me know if you have questions about this...
