Most dental plans cover cleanings and checkups quickly. Fillings, crowns and other bigger work may have a waiting period, often several months.

Many plans also have an annual maximum, the most the plan will pay in a year. Knowing both helps you plan your care.

Plan type affects which doctors you can see and how you get specialist care.

HMOs and EPOs usually cover only in-network care, except emergencies. PPOs let you go out of network, but you'll pay more. Before you pick a plan, check that your doctors are in its network.
