I had a conversation recently with someone whose mother had been on the same Medicare Advantage plan for three years. This year, the plan changed its formulary. Her most important medication was no longer covered the same way, and she did not find out until she went to pick up her prescription.

It did not have to happen that way.

Every fall, I ask people to do one simple thing: call your parents and ask when they last reviewed their Medicare plan. Not because something is definitely wrong. Just because the only way to know is to look.

October 15 marks the start of the Annual Enrollment Period, which runs through December 7. This is the one window each year when seniors can switch, drop, or change their Medicare plan.

Here is what a lot of families do not realize: Medicare plans can change their covered medications, provider networks, and costs from one year to the next. A plan that worked perfectly in 2026 may not offer the same benefits heading into 2027.

I got into it because I wanted people to feel truly protected.
