September is Life Insurance Awareness Month, so here's a different way to think about life insurance:

The person who buys the policy usually isn't the person it's ultimately for.

It's for the spouse who still has a mortgage to pay. The children who still have years of growing up ahead of them. The family that may need time to adjust without immediately worrying about money.

That's why the better question isn't always, "Do I need life insurance?"

Sometimes it's:

"Who would feel the financial impact if my income suddenly wasn't here?"

That answer usually tells you why protection matters.

People often think financial security is reaching a certain number.

In reality, it often feels much simpler than that.

It's sleeping a little better.

It's knowing your family has a plan.

It's feeling confident that you've prepared for the things you can control, while accepting that life will always have surprises.

Financial security isn't about eliminating uncertainty.

It's about reducing it.

As our parents get older, many of us begin taking on new responsibilities.

Sometimes it's helping with appointments.

Sometimes it's helping with finances.

Sometimes it's simply having conversations that have been postponed for years.

One of the most meaningful gifts we can give our parents and ourselves is making sure important plans are in place before they're needed.

These conversations aren't always easy.

But they're often an act of love.

Most people think the greatest gift they can leave their family is money.

It isn't.

It's organization.

Knowing where important documents are.
Having beneficiaries up to date.
Making your wishes clear.

These things may never feel urgent.

But one day, they may become invaluable.

Planning isn't just about protecting your assets.
It's about protecting your family from unnecessary stress.

National Financial Awareness Day isn't about knowing everything.

It's about being honest with yourself.

Ask yourself one simple question:

"If I had to explain my financial plan to someone else, could I?"

Not every detail.

Just the big picture.

Knowing where your money is, what's protected, and what you're working toward creates a level of confidence that's hard to measure, but easy to feel.

Awareness is often the first step toward better decisions.

Think back to the way you learned about money.

For many of us, it wasn't in school.

It was watching our parents work long hours, save for big purchases, or make sacrifices so the family could have a better future.

Whether those lessons were intentional or not, they shaped the way we think about money today.

Now many of us are in the opposite role. Our children are watching us.

They're learning from the conversations we have, the habits we practice, and the decisions we make every day.

The greatest financial lesson we can pass on isn't how to pick the perfect investment.

It's showing them that money is a tool to support the people we love, prepare for the future, and create opportunities for the next generation.

The conversations we have today often become the habits our children carry tomorrow.

Back-to-school season reminds us how quickly life moves.

One year you're buying backpacks.
The next you're touring colleges.

As your children grow, your financial priorities often grow with them.

Maybe it's time to revisit:

- College savings

- Life insurance needs

- Your family's long-term goals

Growing families deserve plans that grow with them.

Life has a way of becoming more complicated over time. More accounts. More bills. More responsibilities.

Your finances can feel the same way.

Sometimes, the best financial move isn't opening another account or buying another investment. It's simplifying what you already have.

Take a few minutes this month to ask yourself:

- Do I know where all of my important documents are?

- Are my beneficiaries up to date?

- Could my family easily find what they need if something happened to me?

Financial confidence often starts with organization, not complexity.

One of the biggest differences between people who feel confident about their finances and those who don't isn't income.

It's awareness.

Ask yourself one simple question:

"If my life changed tomorrow, would I know what my next step is?"

You don't need every answer today.

But knowing where you stand, what's protected, and what still needs attention can replace a surprising amount of uncertainty with confidence.

Financial confidence isn't built overnight.

It's built every time you choose clarity over guessing.

Every parent wants something remarkably similar.

- To see their children healthy.

- To watch them find their own path.

- To know they'll have opportunities.

Most of the financial decisions parents make come back to those hopes.

- Saving a little more.

- Planning a little further ahead.

- Protecting the life they've worked so hard to build.

To all the parents doing their best every day - thank you.

Happy National Parents' Day!
