Uniforms For Youth was inspired by Emilie, a rising 7th grader in Baldwin County, Alabama, who noticed students who frequently came to school without the proper uniform on. In some cases, some students wore the exact same uniform for days at a time. What she realized is that many of these students didn't have a choice due to their family's financial situation. Emilie felt compelled to help, and Un
iforms for Youth was born. More than 31% of families in Baldwin County live below the poverty level - more than twice the national average. Many families struggle to purchase new uniforms when they need them. Kids grow fast and clothes get worn out. At minimum, a family needs at least five uniforms (one uniform includes a shirt and bottoms), plus a sweater, sweatshirt or coat during colder months, per child to cover an entire school year. Often, more are needed. The cost of uniforms can add up to hundreds of dollars each year, especially for larger households; a cost many families simply can't afford. Our mission is to help outfit Baldwin County students with the uniforms they need for school. To do this, we need the support of the community in two ways. First, through donations of school uniforms (either pre-owned in very good condition or new) and/or through financial donations to purchase uniforms. Whenever possible, we will buy pre-owned uniforms in at least very good condition. Our goal is to provide each child with up to two uniforms (one uniform includes 1 top and 1 bottom) for each semester (Fall and Spring) of the 2017-2018 school year, as donations and funding permit. For the Fall semester, uniforms will be distributed to families in August before the school year begins on August 21, 2017, and distributed in January 2018 for the Spring semester.
