Dance Has the Power to Bring Memories Back
Every few minutes, she would introduce herself again.
Her memory had faded so much that each conversation felt like the first. Living in a memory care unit, she struggled to hold onto the people and moments happening around her.
Then the music started.
As she participated in one of our Dance Every Journey classes, something remarkable happened.
She smiled, looked around the room, and said,
"Wow... I feel like I'm back in my fifth-grade dance class with my teacher."
Then she said her teacher's name.
For just a moment, decades melted away. A memory that had been hidden deep within resurfaced through movement and music. While dementia had stolen so much, dance found a pathway back.
Moments like this remind us that dance is about so much more than movement. It's about connection. It's about dignity. It's about joy. And sometimes, it's about unlocking memories that families thought were gone forever.
That is why Dance Every Journey exists.
We provide exceptional, on-site dance programming for seniors in assisted living and retirement communities throughout Johnson County. Our specialized curriculum is designed to improve balance, coordination, strength, cardiovascular health, brain function, and emotional well-being while creating meaningful social connections and bringing joy to every class.
One of the things we're most proud of is that our programming is completely free for every assisted living and retirement community we serve. We never want cost to prevent a senior from experiencing the physical, emotional, and cognitive benefits of dance.
That mission is only possible because of generous supporters like you.
This year, Randy Goodin has stepped onto the dance floor as a participant in Dancing With the Johnson County Stars to help raise funds for Dance Every Journey.
