Grain Marketing Mindset Monday - Corn Spec Fund Selling - Managed money net long in corn fell 83,414 contracts from the prior week, the largest single‑week drop in the COT series. Net long position is now 168,000 contracts lower than the ~427,000‑contract peak, a ~44% reduction over four weeks. As of Oct. 13, 2026, funds were net long 246,425 contracts, down from 414,000+ earlier in the month. Corn funds are in a rapid unwind from record highs, with a 168k contract cut since mid‑September. This positioning pattern, combined with USDA data and weather expectations, is a key driver of recent price moves lower. Graph is a 3 month daily close of December corn futures.

From FarmDoc Daily
2025 Final ARC/PLC Payments
Final marketing year average (MYA) prices were recently released by the USDA for nearly all eligible commodities, and the Farm Service Agency (FSA) has finalized the payments for most commodities from the Agricultural Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price Loss (PLC) programs for the 2025 crop year. This summarizes the actual 2025 payments, which producers should receive by the end of October. Overall, payment rates were substantial and widespread across most of the US for corn, soybeans and wheat, averaging $62, $29 and $47 per base acre, respectively.

Changes to commodity title programs were enacted through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA). Over time, these changes will result in higher ARC/PLC payment rates compared to the previous Farm Bill. Price and yield conditions in 2025 were expected to result in substantial payments in particular. More detailed discussion on the changes in OBBBA were provided in articles from July 2025 (see farmdoc daily articles from July 3 and July 15, 2025). Importantly, given that OBBBA was signed after the ARC/PLC enrollment period for 2025, a special rule was applied in which farmers would get the maximum payment from ARC-CO or PLC if they enrolled in either of these programs. Payment estimates were also discussed at various points in the 2025 marketing year in previous articles (see farmdoc daily articles from November 18, 2025 and May 14, 2026).

From Brownfield
Economist says record ARC and PLC payments offer relief, not a long-term fix

An ag economist says this year’s commodity program payments could provide additional support for farmers facing tighter margins.
But, David Widmar with Agricultural Economic Insights tells Brownfield, “There isn’t a risk management connection there,” he says. “Diesel prices don’t factor into if those payments are triggered. ARC and PLC payments that we’re receiving today are based on last year’s production.”
The USDA recently announced the Farm Service Agency’s Ag Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price Loss Coverage (PLC) programs are expected to provide a record $13.8 billion in gross payments. USDA began processing payments on October 8th.
Widmar says those payments won’t offset the long-term impact of higher input costs.
“Build a plan on what works today,” he says. “Be thinking about if you want to be working the ground and applying anhydrous ammonia with an applicator. How many tillage passes do I want to do? Make sure you understand how these costs are going to work their way throughout your entire crop budget.”
Widmar says building a budget based on current costs will be critical to help producers navigate a higher cost environment heading into 2027.
The USDA’s 2026 farm program enrollment period is now open through December 11.
