A house fire doesn't have to completely destroy your belongings for them to become part of the insurance claim.

Smoke, soot, heat and firefighting water can affect clothing, furniture, electronics, photographs, mattresses, household goods and personal belongings throughout the home — sometimes far beyond the area where the actual fire occurred.

Then the questions begin:

What should be cleaned and what should be replaced?
Should you allow a contents company to pack everything out?
What happens if you don't have receipts?
How does the insurance company calculate depreciation?
And should you throw away badly damaged belongings?

We put together a comprehensive guide explaining the personal property side of a house fire insurance claim, including contents inventories, pack-outs, smoke damage, cleaning vs. replacement, ACV vs. RCV, and some of the mistakes to avoid after a fire.

If you or someone you know has experienced a house fire, this is worth reading before belongings start leaving the property.

🔥 The fire may not be what caused the most damage...

When firefighters save a home, they often use hundreds or even thousands of gallons of water. That water can damage rooms the flames never touched.

The good news? In many cases, that water damage is covered as part of the same fire insurance claim.

Read our latest article to learn why documenting all the damage—not just the burned areas—is so important.

When firefighters extinguish a house fire, thousands of gallons of water may cause extensive damage. Learn why homeowners insurance generally covers both the fire and the resulting water damage.

A fire can damage much more than what actually burns.

🔥 Direct flame damage
🌡️ Heat damage
💨 Smoke and soot contamination
💧 Water from firefighting efforts
🏠 Hidden damage inside walls, ceilings and other building assemblies
🛋️ Damage to furniture and personal property
🌬️ Lingering smoke odors and potential HVAC involvement

One of the biggest mistakes a property owner can make after a fire is assuming that the visibly burned area represents the entire loss.

We created a comprehensive new guide explaining what fire damage really looks like, what homeowners should be looking for, and why properly identifying and documenting each category of damage matters during an insurance claim.

We also discuss firefighting water damage, hidden damage, cleaning vs. replacement, personal property, smoke migration, documentation, and the different portions of a homeowners insurance policy that may come into play after a fire.

At VIP Adjusting, we believe education should come before representation. The more you understand about your property, your policy and the claims process, the better prepared you are to make informed decisions.

How long will my insurance claim take?

It is one of the most common questions we are asked, and the honest answer is: it depends.

The timeline can vary based on the type of claim, the policy, the insurance company, the details of the loss, the documentation needed, and whether the claim is accepted, underpaid, partially denied, or denied in full.

Some claims move quickly. Others require patience, persistence, and follow-up. Even when an insurance company makes an initial decision, that does not always mean the claim is finished. If the claim is underpaid or denied, additional steps may be available, including a supplement, negotiation, appraisal, mediation, settlement, or litigation depending on the situation.

At VIP Adjusting, we work to keep your claim moving, make sure your damage is properly documented, and put you in the strongest position possible to recover the payment you are owed.

⚠️ You may have already signed away your right to sue your insurance company.

If your property insurance policy includes an arbitration clause, it can completely change how your claim is handled.

Instead of going to court, you could be forced into a private process with:
• No jury
• Limited ability to challenge decisions
• Fewer legal protections

Most homeowners don’t realize this until a claim is denied or underpaid. By then, your options may already be limited.

This is becoming more common, especially here in Florida, and it’s something every homeowner should understand before a loss ever happens.
