When should you take your RMD?

It's one of the most common questions we hear. If you need the money, take it when you need it. If you don't, you still have to take it within the calendar year.

Many retirees who don't need their RMD for living expenses choose to reinvest it in a taxable account after it's taxed, so it can stay invested for the long term.

Year-end is closer than it looks. Do you know your RMD deadline?

If you're 73 or older, the IRS generally expects your Required Minimum Distribution to be taken by December 31. Missing it can bring an excise tax of up to 25%, which can drop to 10% if it's corrected in time.
