Today is for the people who build things. The founders who started with a garage full of inventory and a spreadsheet that almost held together. The operators who are still up late reconciling numbers that do not quite add up.

Gwendolyn started Darë Vegan Cheese in a commissary kitchen, making cheese downstairs between shifts waiting tables upstairs. Then COVID closed the restaurant, she lost the backup job, and the business became the only job.

Years in, she told us something that stuck with the team. There was a moment in 2022, mid build-out, where she had to buy a pallet of cashews but also needed to pay her staff. She made it work through a friend. But she said it plainly: you can only lean on people so long.

That is the version of "cash flow problem" nobody puts in a founder highlight reel.
When she came to Fiskal, the books were messy. Manufacturing does that. COGS sitting on the P&L the moment cash goes out, instead of moving through as product gets made and sold. Hard to see anything clearly when the numbers don't reflect what's actually happening in the business.

What changed wasn't dramatic. She trusts her numbers now. She can look at a channel, see the real margin, and decide not to chase the exciting retail deal because it doesn't actually make money. Decisions through numbers, not through clout.

Donald has been in the frozen beverage world his whole career. Built one company to 8,000 convenience store locations and sold it. Bought Pioneer Family Brands from his father along the way. The man has done his reps.

Pioneer ran on SAP Business One for around twenty years. It worked. Then his president and his controller left within the same stretch, the controller after 35 years, and Donald hit a wall. Hiring people who actually knew SAP turned out to be hard and expensive. Every outsourcing firm he spoke to said the same thing: if you stay on SAP, we have to go find SAP people too, and that costs you.

So he started looking at modern tech stacks he didn't even know existed a few months earlier.

He landed on Cin7, plus Xero, Gusto, Ramp, and his WooCommerce site. Five tools doing what SAP used to do alone. His reason for choosing it was not really the software. It was that someone needed to understand how all five pieces fit together. As he put it, the service partner matters more than the software itself.

What stuck with the team was how fast he moved. He treats outsourced finance like an embedded employee, tells them what's working, tells them what isn't, and trusts his gut once it's made up. His line on it: the longer you take aiming the gun, the more time you waste arriving at the same decision.

He went live at the start of his new fiscal year. A few glitches, nothing that stopped the business. The monthly reporting he used to run himself now arrives summarized and ready to read.

Move when your gut is sure. Then build the system that proves it right.

A lot of systems projects don't fail because they did too little. They fail because they tried to do everything on day one.

It's a pattern Kyle has watched play out. You get excited about all the data you could capture, all the variables you could model, and you build something so complex it can't actually be run. The plan looks impressive and collapses under its own weight.
His rule is the opposite. Handle complexity by boiling it back down to simplicity. A small business wearing many hats can hold a lot in tribal knowledge. A larger operation can't, so the answer is tighter rules and cleaner data, not more moving parts.

Start with a foundation you can trust. Add complexity only when the business actually needs it, and only once the data can carry it.

The goal was never the most sophisticated plan. It's the one that still works in six months.

Eric spent ten years welding artistic water fountains. Somewhere in the fumes he realized two things: this probably wasn't great for his lungs, and every job was a custom rebuild he couldn't scale.

One night he read the ingredient list on his toothpaste, started Googling, and didn't like what he found. Three years of formulating later, David's launched in 2015.
For the first three years he mixed every tube himself. Two hours to mix 200 tubes, another hour to fill them by hand. When David's launched in 500 Whole Foods stores, Eric had personally mixed and filled every tube that went out. His wife came home from teaching and helped box orders for the post office. A full family effort, in the literal sense.

Today there's a team of about 30 and 70-plus percent year over year growth. Eric is out of the mixing room.

But here's the part worth sitting with. Asked what he'd do differently across eleven years, his answer was finance. He ran sales himself for the first seven years and handled the money lean, with a CPA who helped in some regards. His words: unless you've got millions from investors, you'd better make sure you can hold the cash flow. Earlier support on the finance side would have helped, for sure.

A founder who built a brand on persistence and detective work, and the one thing he'd change is bringing in finance sooner.

That's not a coincidence. It's the pattern.

Last week the whole Fiskal team got out of the office for our Quarterly Connect.

We do this at the end of every quarter on purpose. Slack threads and standups only show you so much of the people you work with. A day or two away from screens and around each other, solves that.

Part of the connect is presentations from across the business: sales, marketing, account management, fractional operations, systems, AI, and a session on Fiskal culture itself. Most of us only see our own corner of the company day to day. This is the one time a quarter we get the full picture, and it makes the whole team work better together for it.

We also built in real downtime. Walks, amazing food, some scenery good enough to clear your head between sessions, and conversations that would not have happened while at the office.

Great quarter behind us. And an even better one ahead.

Two years running, has put Fiskal up for Accounting Partner of the Year. Won it in 2025, nominated again for 2026.

It's the accounting category that makes this one worth noting. Plenty of firms can configure Cin7. Plenty of accountants can close a set of books. Very few do both, at the exact point where inventory and operations turn into the numbers on the financial statements.

That handoff is where product businesses quietly lose trust in their data, and it's the hardest part to get right.

A back to back nod there is Cin7 saying Fiskal holds both sides of that line.

Back in April we closed the laptops and drove out to the mountains for our Quarterly Connect.

It was held at Rusty Gate, a 620 acre farm tucked up against the Riviersonderend reserve about an hour and a half from the office.

It is the kind of place where there is fynbos in every direction and absolutely no reason to check Slack, which is exactly why we go.

The work we do is detailed and it asks a lot of everyone, so a day or two out in nature is how the whole team actually gets to switch off and reconnect properly.
