Claiming Social Security at 62 can permanently shrink your monthly income.

Here’s a simple example:

If your benefit at full retirement age 67 would be $2,000 per month:

• Claim at 62: about $1,400/month
• Claim at 67: $2,000/month
• Claim at 70: about $2,480/month

That’s roughly a 30% reduction for claiming early: or about an 8% increase for each year you delay past full retirement age, up to age 70.

And there’s another Medicare planning issue: Medicare premiums are often deducted directly from your Social Security check. Your claiming age can affect your monthly cash flow for decades.

But there is no single “right” age for everyone.
