Here’s a summary of the IRS Tax Tip on homeowner tax benefits:

What you can deduct (if you itemize):

• State/local real estate taxes (up to $40,000; $20,000 if married filing separately)
• Home mortgage interest (within limits)

What you cannot deduct:
Insurance, principal payments, utilities, closing costs, HOA fees, home repairs, Wi-Fi, depreciation, or domestic help wages.

Mortgage Interest Credit: Available to lower-income homeowners who received a Mortgage Credit Certificate from their state/local government — lets them claim a credit (not just a deduction) on mortgage interest paid annually.

Ministers & Military: Those receiving a nontaxable housing allowance can still fully deduct real estate taxes and mortgage interest without reducing them by the allowance amount.

The key takeaway: itemizing is required to claim these deductions, so homeowners should weigh whether their deductible expenses exceed the standard deduction.

My family thinks I’ve become stingy. I think I’ve just become aware. 👀

A family member recently told me I’ve changed since becoming a bookkeeper — that I’ve gotten stingy with my money.

And honestly? They’re not wrong that I’ve changed. But stingy isn’t the word I’d use.

I’ve just learned to see what most people don’t: the leaks.

In bookkeeping, one of the most eye-opening things you do for a business is track where money is quietly walking out the door — subscriptions nobody uses, fees that compound, small “insignificant” purchases that add up to hundreds (sometimes thousands) a month. We call them money leaks, and they are sneaky.

Once you start seeing them in your clients’ books, you can’t un-see them in your own life.

That $14.99 here. The $7 “convenience fee” there. The recurring charge you forgot about six months ago. None of it feels like much — until you actually add it up.

That’s what bookkeeping teaches you: it’s not about being cheap, it’s about being intentional. Every dollar has a destination, and you should be the one choosing it — not a forgotten auto-renewal.

So no, I’m not stingy. I’m just running my personal finances like I help my clients run their businesses — with clarity, awareness, and zero tolerance for money leaks. 💸

Are you keeping an eye on where your money is going — or is it quietly slipping away?

“There’s been a lot of talk lately about AI replacing bookkeepers, and honestly? For those of us still learning and growing in this field, that can feel intimidating sometimes.

But something happened this week that reminded me WHY the human factor matters so much in bookkeeping.

I recently ran payroll for a client through QuickBooks. Everything appeared normal. No obvious warnings. No flashing errors. Nothing that screamed “problem.”

But something didn’t feel right to me.

So I investigated further.

Sure enough, the payroll had duplicated.

QuickBooks didn’t catch it. AI didn’t catch it. Automation didn’t catch it.

A HUMAN did.

Not because I’m some all-knowing expert with 30 years of experience. But because humans notice patterns. We question things. We investigate when something feels off. We apply judgment and critical thinking in ways software simply can’t.

The software processed data exactly as instructed.

But I was the one smart enough to realize there might BE a problem in the first place.

And more importantly, I was the one who fixed it.

That was a huge reminder to me that bookkeeping is not just data entry. Good bookkeeping requires discernment, reasoning, intuition, communication, and problem-solving.

AI is an incredible tool. I use it. I appreciate it. But tools still need people behind them who understand the story the numbers are telling.“

A fellow bookkeeper posted this.

It is important to remember that though AI can be a great tool you should never fully rely on it.

One of my personal examples comes from running formulas for a client a few months ago. QBO Insights gave me a different gross profit margin than the one I had manually done. I ran my numbers through the AI agents I had available to me and the number I had was the same as the one they had come up with. At the same time when I was trying to find another formula for the financials that I didn’t have on hand I ran it through one AI agent and out of curiosity ran it through another. Each AI gave me a different formula that created different answers.

As someone that has done DIY Bookkeepjng prior to pursuing my degree, I can see when looking back just how much I lost from errors and missed deductions. I also see the inaccuracy of AI when it comes to bookkeeping. It is important to have someone that is in your books and familiar with your business to catch errors and missed information. This is why it’s extremely important to have a bookkeeper for your business no matter how big or small.
