After a fender bender or damage to your home, the answer to “how much will I have to pay?” shouldn’t come as a surprise.

After all, your deductible is the portion of a covered claim that you’re responsible for.
So, say, for example, that a covered loss totals $5,000 and the applicable deductible is $500, you’d be responsible for $500, leaving $4,500 for your insurance provider to pay.

At the same time, that one number may not apply to everything. Your auto collision and comprehensive deductibles may differ; and some homeowners policies have a separate wind, earthquake, or hail deductible—sometimes even calculated by a percentage.

So it's wise to take a few minutes to review the deductibles in your policy documents.
