What is a Deductible? Let’s break it down 👇

Your deductible is the amount YOU pay out of pocket before your insurance starts sharing the cost.

📍 Example:

One of my clients had a $2,000 deductible.
They needed a minor surgery that cost $3,500

Here’s how it works:

First $2,000 → paid by the client (this is the deductible)
Remaining $1,500 → insurance kicks in

If their plan has 20% coinsurance, then:

Insurance pays 80% of $1,500 = $1,200
Client pays 20% = $300

✅ Total paid by client: $2,300
✅ Insurance paid: $1,200

⚠️ Important:
Even after you meet your deductible, you may STILL pay coinsurance until you hit your out-of-pocket maximum.

📌 Why this matters:
Choosing a lower premium plan often means a HIGHER deductible - and that can cost you more later if something happens.

Not sure what your deductible is or how your plan works?
Message me 📩 I’ll help you review it.

How Does Dental Insurance Work?

Dental insurance is actually pretty simple once you break it down.

1. Preventive Care = Usually FREE
Most plans cover:
✔️ Cleanings
✔️ Exams
✔️ X-rays
➡️ Typically covered at 100% in-network to help you avoid bigger problems later

2. Basic Services
This includes:
✔️ Fillings
✔️ Simple extractions
✔️Gum treatments
✔️ Root canal treatment
➡️ Usually covered around 70–80% (you pay the rest)

3. Major Services
Like:
✔️ Crowns
✔️ Bridges
✔️ Dentures
➡️ Covered around 50%, and often have a waiting period (6–12 months)

4. Deductible

Small annual amount (ex: $25–$100)
➡️ You pay this first before most services (except preventive)

5. Annual Maximum

Most plans have a limit (ex: $1,000–$2,000 per year)
➡️ Once reached, you pay 100% out-of-pocket

6. Networks Matter
In-network dentists = lower costs
Out-of-network = you may pay more (and get balance billed)

💡 Important to know:
Dental insurance is NOT like medical insurance - it’s more like a cost-sharing plan with limits.

Best strategy?
Use it for preventive care + plan ahead for bigger procedures.

🚨 Lost Medicaid? You May Qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) ⬇️

If you or your family recently lost Medicaid, you don’t have to stay uninsured — you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) to get Marketplace health insurance.

✅ What is SEP?
A Special Enrollment Period allows you to enroll in health insurance outside of Open Enrollment due to certain life events — including losing Medicaid.

📅 How long do you have?
➡️ Usually 90 days from the date your Medicaid coverage ends

💰 Can you get financial help?
Yes! Many people qualify for subsidies (financial assistance) that lower:
✔️ Monthly premiums
✔️ Out-of-pocket costs

👉 The amount of help you get is based on your household income and family size

💡 Why this is important:
If you miss your SEP window, you may have to wait until the next Open Enrollment — and risk being uninsured.

⚠️ Don’t wait until your coverage ends
You can often apply before Medicaid ends to avoid a gap in coverage.

HMO, PPO, POS - Which Plan is Right for You?

Choosing the right health insurance plan is not just about the monthly premium - it affects which doctors you can see, how much you pay, and how easy it is to get care.

Here’s a simple breakdown of the three most common plan types 👇

✅ HMO (Health Maintenance Organization)
➡️ You must choose a Primary Care Doctor (P*P)
➡️ Referrals are required to see specialists
➡️ Coverage is only in-network (except emergencies)
➡️ Lower costs, but limited flexibility

💡 Best for: People who want to save money and don’t mind staying within a network.

🔵 PPO (Preferred Provider Organization)
➡️ No referrals needed
➡️ You can go in or out of network
➡️ More freedom to choose doctors
➡️ Higher costs, especially out-of-network

💡 Best for: People who want flexibility and don’t want to deal with referrals.

🟡 POS (Point of Service)
➡️ Requires a P*P & referrals
➡️ Can go out-of-network (at a higher cost)
➡️ Combination of HMO + PPO
➡️ Moderate cost and flexibility

💡 Best for: People who want a balance between cost and flexibility.

🚨 Why This Is Important:
The type of plan you choose directly affects:
✔️ Your total medical costs
✔️ Which doctors you can see
✔️ Whether you need referrals
✔️ Your risk of unexpected bills

👉 The wrong plan can cost you hundreds or even thousands of dollars more.

💡 In-Network vs Out-of-Network - Why It Matters ⬇️

When using your health insurance, one of the most important things to understand is the difference between in-network and out-of-network providers.

✅ In-Network
These are doctors, hospitals, and clinics that have a contract with your insurance company.
➡️ They offer lower, negotiated rates
➡️ Your insurance covers more of the cost
➡️ You pay less out of pocket

⚠️ Out-of-Network
These providers do NOT have a contract with your insurance.
➡️ They can charge higher prices
➡️ Your insurance may cover less - or nothing at all
➡️ You could receive unexpected (and expensive) bills

🚨 Important Tip:
When scheduling an appointment, don’t just ask:
❌ “Do you accept my insurance?”

Instead, ask:
✔️ “Are you IN-NETWORK with my specific plan?”

👉 A provider might “accept” your insurance but still be out-of-network, which can cost you hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

💬 Always double-check before your visit - it’s one of the easiest ways to protect your wallet!

Has Your Child Been Moved to Medicaid Spenddown?

If you applied to renew Medicaid and received a letter from DHS saying your child was moved to the Spenddown program, it means DHS determined that your income slightly exceeds the All Kids program limit.

Now, to activate Medicaid, you need to cover a monthly deductible - medical bills you must submit before the insurance becomes active.

⚠️ IMPORTANT:
Your child’s health insurance will NOT be active until you provide medical bills equal to the deductible amount.

What to Do:

1️⃣ Check the income DHS used 💰

The letter will show the income they calculated.
If it’s incorrect, you can:
Submit an online income change request with supporting documents
Call DHS at the number listed in the letter
Visit the DHS office in person

2️⃣ Check the family size 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Make sure all children are listed as dependents.
Mistakes here can change your income calculation and deductible.

3️⃣ If income and family size are correct ✅

Spenddown deductibles are often very high and require accumulating monthly medical expenses to activate coverage.
For many families, this is difficult or impossible 😔
