Chess originated in India during the 5th century.
Each player starts with 16 pieces, including a king, queen, bishops, knights, rooks, and pawns.
A chess game can end in as few as two moves!
The longest officially recorded chess game lasted 269 moves.
The word "checkmate" comes from a Persian phrase meaning "the King is dead."
