Lisa's Organizing Tip #16: It's the perfect time of year to focus on organizing your gift wrap, gift boxes, bags, bows and tags. Try separating these items the way you use them - for example, keeping December holiday items (Christmas / Hanukah) in one place and items for use any other day in another place. It's also helpful to find ways to maximize vertical space, if available. This allows you to stand up rolls of paper and take up the least shelf or floor space (like in the picture). Other items can be sorted in bags, bins or boxes that you label. Just remember to use reasonable sized containers so you don't lose items in the bottom and never find them again. The goal is to only spend seconds finding the wrapping items you need, never buying things you already have and enjoy more fun time this holiday season!

Lisa's Organizing Tip #15: It's hard to believe we're hearing Christmas music and seeing holiday decorations going up. As we think about all the gift wrapping ahead of us, I heard a fantastic idea from a friend this weekend! We discussed de-cluttering our homes and finding ways to recycle and re-use, and she mentioned using those no longer needed rolls of wallpaper, as wrapping paper! It's sturdy and pretty - and most of us have a roll or two tucked away somewhere in the attic, garage or a closet. So don't wait until your next move to discover those hidden rolls; pull them out and use them in a most economical and creative way to wrap for upcoming holidays or birthdays!

Lisa's Organizing Tip #14: Is it time to spice up your life? OK, maybe it's just time to get your spices under control. When I did this recently, I found many spice duplicates! How often do we get to the store, not remember what we have at home and buy something "just in case?" Here are 2 quick tips to keep your spices organized: 1) in the pantry use a lazy susan (or two) to maximize space and to allow you to put like spice categories together (like spices for baking or grilling); and 2) put any extra spices in an airtight container with a list of what you have - before you shop, check your list! Organized spices may inspire you to experiment and get creative!!

Lisa's Organizing Tip #13: After a couple of recent car trips, and seeing this and other photos in an article I was reading, I was reminded again how important it is to keep our cars organized - especially the hatchback! There are a number of organizing items you can use to help keep your trunk area neat, but I find the very basic "milk crate" to be the most effective. I keep blankets, reusable grocery bags, umbrellas, workout gear and small tools all in one crate. Because it is not a solid material, the contents never get damp or musty. Leaving the crate in the car, or even pulling it out temporarily, my trunk always has space to pile in groceries, suitcases or whatever I'm hauling, without having to stop and straighten up or clean out. Here's wishing all your miles are happy ones!

Lisa's Organizing Tip #12: How about a sobering fact...? While developing a presentation about time management, I learned that a person who works in a "messy" or cluttered environment spends, on average, 1 1/2 hours/day or 10 ½ hours/week looking for things or being distracted by things! Let me help with 3 time management tips for today 1) keep a log for 2 weeks to understand where you spend your time; is time spent on your priorities or do you need to adjust? 2) set daily aggressive but realistic goals, then stay focused but flexible, and 3) make sure you allow time for creative and healthy activities such as planning, dreaming, thinking, exercising, reading AND organizing! I hope Dilbert cartoons make you laugh like they do for me!

Instead of an organizing tip this week, I wanted to invite you to the Sachse Community Marketplace this coming Saturday, Sept. 9th. I will be setting up a booth there along with a number of other vendors who are sharing creative goods and useful services! In addition to the vendor booths, there will be a raffle - and any proceeds from the event will be given to charities for women and children around Dallas and North Texas. The Marketplace will be held from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM at First United Church of Sachse - 1520 Blackburn Road, Sachse, TX 75048. I'm excited to be participating and hope I will see you there!

Lisa's Organizing Tip #11: Let's focus on jewelry! I have to admit that I still have a large project ahead of me to sort, donate and find the best storage options for all of my jewelry. The one solution I love for my necklaces, however, is a simple peg type wall mount on the side of a shelf just inside my closet door. I tried the individual hangers that stick to the wall but those eventually unstuck (especially with the heavier costume jewelry). This type of hanger is made for ties or scarves, but works beautifully for necklaces and can be spaced out to accommodate all lengths. Your necklaces will be easy to see and to grab off the peg. More to come on jewelry solutions in the future!

Lisa's Organizing Tip #10: This week I'll focus on a beautifying tip for you. If you have herbs growing in your garden, bring their beauty inside! For a quick and cost effective way to brighten your table, counter or kitchen, try putting cuttings in a vase instead of buying flowers. Here are a couple of pictures of bouquets of basil, oregano, rosemary and mint - you can almost smell how amazing these are. And if you keep the vases nearby when you are cooking, just snip some fresh herbs for your salads or meals. Enjoy!!

Lisa's Organizing Tip #9: Do you ever feel "stuck" and just don't know how you will ever tackle the pile, the project or what is looming just behind the closet door!? The secret is to just start! One inch, one drawer, one shelf, one item at a time. A couple of "before" and "after" pictures can show how easy it would be to stay stuck - or even run away! But once you start, you'll take the steps you need to achieve the success you desire! "The elevator to success is out of order. You'll have to use the stairs...one step at a time." ~Joe Girard
