Mortgage Market Update: Rates, Inflation, and What’s Next

What Happened Last Week

• GDP Growth Slowed. Q1 growth came in at just 1.6% versus 2.5% expected, signaling the economy may be cooling faster than anticipated.

• Inflation Stayed Sticky. Core PCE inflation rose 0.3% month-over-month (2.8% annual), keeping pressure on interest rates.

• Mortgage Rates Held Steady. After early-week volatility, the 30-year fixed mortgage rate eased to 7.03% (Freddie Mac), offering borrowers modest relief.

What to Watch This Week

• Fed Meeting Wednesday. No rate cut is expected, but Fed Chair Powell’s comments could still move mortgage rates.

• April Jobs Report Friday. A strong jobs number could push rates up; softer data could help them ease.
