Insurance can be so confusing, so a lot of my clients ask me to explain the difference between a copay and their deductible. In the simplest form, if your insurance benefit summary has a dollar amount listed for a service, that will be a set amount for that service. For example: $40 copay to see a Primary Care Physician. If you see a percentage listed for a service, like 80% for the Emergency Room, you have to pay out of pocket until you've reached your deductible amount (for example, $3000). Once you've paid the deductible amount, the insurance carrier covers the percentage (80% in this example) and you cover the remaining amount of the charge (you'd pay 20%).
