A Wise County jury on Tuesday, May 5, 2026 sentenced Tanner Horner to death for the 2022 kidnapping and murder of 7-year-old Athena Strand. Horner, a former FedEx driver, had already pleaded guilty to capital murder at the start of trial, leaving the jury to decide whether he would receive life without parole or the death penalty.
Athena was reported missing from her home in Paradise, Texas, on November 30, 2022. Investigators said Horner abducted her while delivering a package to the family’s home. Her body was found two days later, and the case quickly drew national attention because of both Athena’s age and the horrifying circumstances surrounding her death.
During the punishment phase, jurors heard evidence about Athena’s final moments, along with arguments from the defense about Horner’s mental health and background. In the end, the jury found that he posed a continuing threat and did not find enough mitigating circumstances to spare him from a death sentence. Under Texas law, the sentence now heads into the automatic appeals process.
For many, today’s sentence closes one chapter of a case that devastated a family and shook a community. But it also leaves behind the harder truth that no verdict can undo what happened to Athena Strand.
