Try this fun role-playing exercise with a colleague or sales coach:

You play the salesperson and have your colleague play the customer. Have the ‘customer’ talk and then stop every few minutes, and they will quiz you on what you heard. As the ‘salesperson’, recall what the ‘customer’ had said during those 3-4 minutes. Did you catch everything? Keep going until the very end and then have your colleague tell you what you didn’t ask, what you should have, and what it felt like to be your customer.

I always get asked, “Debbie, how can I find a consistent source of referrals to fill my pipeline?”
The issue is that we often ask others if they know “anyone” who would appreciate our service, but that’s far too broad. Instead, get specific. For example, ‘Do you know anyone who has a law practice that deals with family litigation?’ is much more direct and detailed.
In general, people want to help other people (in business). But you have to make it easy for them to do so.
