Biddy Mason was a formerly enslaved Black woman who became one of the most successful landowners in Los Angeles, and her story teaches powerful lessons about real estate, vision, and legacy.

After gaining her freedom, Biddy Mason worked as a nurse and midwife and intentionally saved her money while paying close attention to how Los Angeles was growing. At a time when Black women had no protections, no access to formal lending, and no guarantees, she invested in land anyway. She bought property early, in areas close to commerce and community, understanding that location and timing mattered long before those ideas became common language.

What makes her story remarkable is not just that she owned land, but how she used it. Her real estate wealth became a source of stability not only for herself, but for others. She funded schools, supported churches, and helped formerly enslaved people survive and rebuild. For her, ownership was never just about profit. It was about protection, dignity, and community care.

Philip A. Payton Jr. is often called the Father of Black Harlem and that title wasn’t given lightly.

At the turn of the 20th century, as Black families migrated north looking for opportunity, housing discrimination followed them. Landlords refused to rent. Neighborhoods were closed off. Access was intentionally limited.

Philip Payton understood something critical early on.
If you don’t control the property, you don’t control access.

He began buying buildings in Harlem and renting them to Black tenants who were being pushed out everywhere else. Not as charity. As strategy. As protection. As vision.

He founded the Afro-American Realty Company and used real estate as a tool to stabilize Black families, preserve community, and create economic power in a system that was actively trying to exclude them.

This wasn’t just about buildings.
It was about dignity.
It was about ownership.
It was about deciding who gets to live where and under what conditions.

Mae Jemison

Dr. Mae Jemison was the first African American woman in space.
