Conroe froze over!!!

Kind of... well it definitely got below freezing, and it was very good to be prepared. Like many of you, we wrapped pipes, stocked up on a couple essentials and charged our power bank.

In the end, we thankfully did not lose power (or even internet) and life went on like normal, with just a little less activity.

When a winter storm comes, we are all quick to start planning and preparing. There is immediate and tangible consequence if we don't.

With our financial future, so many of us know what we should be doing, but we delay. Consider it a problem for another day. Maybe because the impact isn't instant or obvious. But the long-term consequences of failing to plan financially are so much larger than a busted pipe or temporary loss of power.

Yesterday I golfed with a Caddie...

While I love to golf, I am definitely not at a level where caddies are necessary, but I had an opportunity to play with one and it was amazing.

After you hit your shot, he would go locate the ball, give you yardage, read the wind, tell you insights about the course, and even offer suggestions about what club to use. By the end of the round, he knew my golf game better than I did.

On the green, he would read putts, point out the exact spot I should aim, suggest how much power to hit the ball and tamp down any rough spots in my line.

It was a truly top-notch experience.

If I’ve learned anything, it’s this: stay dedicated, but focus on one thing at a time. The old “eat the elephant” mentality still works—big ambitions can feel stressful, but breaking them down into small wins makes all the difference.

I had the chance to speak at Career Day for my son’s school yesterday.

I was tempted to dive into P/E ratios and Bond Duration, but on second thought decided maybe that wasn’t right for my 11 year old audience.

Instead I gave every kid a LEGO brick and asked a question….

When you start to build a new LEGO set do you tear open the bag and get to work? If you threw out the instruction manual, is there any chance the final result would look like the picture on the box?

How many people navigate their finances without a plan? What are the chances the end result will look right if you just start building?

I was talking with a client recently who is a few years from retirement and has a considerable percentage of his net worth in his 401k (very common).

He had no clue about his asset allocation (it wasn't what he wanted), had no conviction behind chosen investments (sub-par performance) and didn't understand his options.

We were able to reallocate within the 401k and do an in-service rollover of some of the assets to an IRA for expanded investment options. This brought his plan into alignment with his goals and time horizon.

Do you have a black book?

If you have seen me around town, met me for coffee or been in my office, there is little doubt you have seen my black book. It goes with me everywhere. I use it to write down lists of tasks to accomplish, goals for the month, people to call and more. It helps me do all my planning.

It has become an essential part of my routine before I leave...wallet, phone, keys...book.

Having a plan is great, routine is important and organization is critical. But can we get so tied to our plan that we lose the ability to improvise and adapt?

When it comes to our financial future, what is the proper balance between planning and flexibility? How do we factor in a world of unknowns while still feeling confident about our path?

I was talking with someone recently who is a highly compensated employee at his company.

The conversation was going well, but things really seemed to click when we started talking about where his money was. And no, I don't mean it's physical address.

People get focused on returns and allocation, and that definitely matters. But have you spent any time thinking about the where, what, and why of your financial situation. Sometimes location can be just as important.

Do you understand your account types, tax considerations, and withdrawal rules? Do you know the "why" behind those options?

My friend hadn't even considered the implications.
