A commercial property loss can come without warning. In 2014, Sonrai and Heil explored using Sonrai’s real-time fleet data tool, Vector, under a confidentiality agreement. After the deal fell through, Sonrai’s former executive vice president joined Heil. By 2016, Heil launched a competing product, Enhance, prompting Sonrai to sue over alleged trade secret misuse.

At trial, Sonrai argued the former executive downloaded and deleted proprietary data before leaving, while Heil said any conduct was limited and the information was not explicitly requested. In 2025, a jury awarded nearly $60 million, but in 2026 the court reduced the total to about $10.4 million. The case is a strong reminder that headline verdicts do not always reflect a company’s final financial exposure.
