Am I eligible for a $500 health insurance refund? What you need to know
Many of you have reached out about a $500 health insurance refund making headlines, so I want to clear up what’s happening—and who’s actually eligible. About 1 million Americans who bought their coverage through Healthcare.gov (the federal exchange), and who don’t receive subsidies, will automatically get a one-time $500 rebate in October. This refund comes from excess user fees that led to higher premiums. For those of us navigating Medicare or helping loved ones through it, these details can blur together. My mission has always been to make these topics feel less overwhelming, especially for seniors sorting through their options. If you’re curious whether changes like this could affect you or someone you care for, know that staying informed is the first step to peace of mind.

Medicare Hearing Aids: Who Pays?
One of the most common surprises I see when working with Medicare clients is the issue of hearing aids—what’s covered, and what isn’t. Original Medicare doesn’t include hearing aids or the exams for fitting them, so those costs typically fall entirely on you. If your doctor orders a hearing or balance test for a medical reason, Medicare Part B can help, but you’ll still have to cover deductibles, about 20% coinsurance, and possibly outpatient copays.

Many private Medicare plans offer extra hearing benefits, such as yearly exams, fitting appointments, or allowances for devices. But every plan sets its own rules, so coverage limits, copays, provider networks, and pre-approval steps can make a real difference. Traditional hearing aids often run $1,000–$4,000 per ear, while over-the-counter options for mild to moderate hearing loss range from $100–$700 per pair in the US. For those with severe loss who qualify, Medicare may help with surgically implanted devices as prosthetics, but even then, deductibles, coinsurance, and follow-up expenses can add up quickly.

Having watched my own mother navigate these choices, I know how confusing it can be—and how important it is to get clear, honest guidance. If you’re weighing your options, I’m here to help you make sense of what matters most for your health and your budget.

Medicare Open Enrollment: When It Is and What to Do
Let’s connect and talk about the latest insights in the industry!

Original Medicare Leaves Health Costs Uncovered
Medicare doesn’t always cover what we might expect—something I learned up close while helping my own mother sort through her retirement options. Even by 2027, Original Medicare will still leave important gaps: long-term custodial care (like most assisted living, nursing home stays, or extended home care) generally isn’t included, and routine dental, vision, glasses, contacts, and hearing aids usually aren’t covered either—unless there’s a specific medical reason. Traveling abroad? Elective cosmetic procedures? Even some basic foot care and over-the-counter items all fall outside standard benefits, with only rare exceptions.

That’s why, when I sit down with folks here in Columbia, I always encourage a closer look at what Medicare leaves out. It’s crucial to plan ahead and budget separately for things like long-term care, dental, vision, hearing needs, and other out-of-pocket expenses. Sorting through coverage options can feel overwhelming, but a bit of clarity goes a long way toward peace of mind for your retirement years.

How Medicare Agents Develop Regulatory Expertise
When you’re navigating Medicare, you deserve guidance from someone who understands more than just the basics. I’ve learned that true expertise doesn’t come overnight—it’s built through state licensing, yearly certifications, and regular training to keep up with CMS rules. But it also comes from sitting down one-on-one, listening carefully, and making sure every recommendation is not just accurate, but ethical and right for your needs. Working with so many folks here in Columbia, and watching my own mother go through the Medicare maze, I know how crucial it is to have someone on your side who takes compliance seriously. For me, it’s not just about passing tests—it’s about protecting you and bringing peace of mind to every conversation.

Medigap vs. Medicare Open Enrollment: Key Differences
Every fall, I get questions about the difference between Medicare open enrollment and Medigap enrollment. Here’s what I always share with my clients in Columbia: Medicare open enrollment (Oct 15–Dec 7) is your chance to make changes to your Medicare plan—like switching between original Medicare and Medicare Advantage. But if you’re hoping to add a Medigap (supplemental) policy to help with out-of-pocket expenses, that window is much smaller: you have a six-month period starting when you first enroll in Part B. I know firsthand how overwhelming these choices can feel; it’s why I take the time to explain what actually matters for each person. If you’re sorting through these options, remember—timing makes all the difference.

Why Medicare Rewards Knowledge and Patience
I’ve seen firsthand how Medicare is a world of fine print, deadlines, and more options than anyone expects. When my own mother faced those choices, I realized just how much patience and up-to-date knowledge it takes to untangle the rules and paperwork. That’s why I work closely with seniors in Columbia, breaking down the details and making sure we compare every plan that fits your needs. It’s not just about following the guidelines—it’s about making sure you feel confident that you’ve chosen the coverage that truly works for you. Each client’s situation is unique, and I believe in listening first so we can navigate Medicare together, step by step.

Turning 65: How to Sign Up for Medicare
If you're turning 65 in 2026, now’s the time to start thinking about your Medicare enrollment window. You’ll want to sign up within the seven-month period around your birthday to avoid any gaps in coverage or late penalties. There are some important updates this year—like the new $2,100 cap on out-of-pocket drug costs and reduced prices on many medications—that can really make a difference in your budget. I know from helping my own mother (and many clients here in Columbia) that sorting through these choices can feel overwhelming. My approach is to break down what actually matters so you can make decisions that fit your life. Getting your paperwork in early is the best way to make sure your health coverage continues seamlessly.

Medicare IRMAA: How Income Affects Your Medicare Premiums
One of the most unexpected surprises for many of my Medicare clients is IRMAA—the Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount. If your income from two years ago was above $106,000 (for individuals) or $212,000 (for couples filing jointly), you could see extra charges on your Medicare Part B and D premiums. These surcharges are divided into five brackets, and as your income rises, so do the premiums. I’ve seen how confusing and frustrating it can be to open that letter from Social Security and wonder why your costs are higher than expected. The good news: there are strategies to manage—or even appeal—these costs. Having helped my own mother navigate these same choices, I understand just how overwhelming Medicare can feel. My goal is always to break down what matters for your unique situation and help you feel confident in your health coverage decisions.
