What a great evening we had at our Capstone Film Night with Rocky Mountain Women's Film in August! IRAs Are a Major Source of Inherited Wealth

A significant portion of retirement wealth will eventually transfer to a spouse or the next generation, and inherited IRAs can create complicated tax and distribution decisions for beneficiaries.

A surviving spouse has options that aren't available to most non-spouse beneficiaries:

Spouse inherits IRA
• Usually the first transfer
• Spouse has unusually flexible options
• May roll the IRA into their own IRA
• Decisions can affect when RMDs begin
• Ultimately affects what children inherit

Adult child inherits IRA
• Usually a non-spouse beneficiary
• Generally cannot simply treat the IRA as their own
• The SECURE Act's 10-year rule can create significant tax-planning considerations
• Decisions about when to withdraw can have major income-tax consequences
