If you come across a post or ad like this, STOP!
FIRST: There is no universal "Spending Card" from Medicare loaded with "thousands" of dollars.
SECOND: No spending card would be available within two minutes for immediate use.
-- Are Spending Cards real?
Yes and No. If you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C), you may receive an OTC (Over the Counter) Card. This card provides a quarterly allowance for items like bandages, Tylenol, baby aspirin, depends, and similar essentials. The amount on this card changes yearly based on shifts in the Medicare market.
-- Can you use a Spending Card for bills and essentials?
Again, Yes and No.
To access a card for bills, you must be "Dual Eligible" or "D-SNP," meaning you qualify for Medicaid and Medicare. In these cases, Advantage plans offer comprehensive benefits, including a monthly allowance for over-the-counter items and bills. The allowance varies with market changes, but these plans are becoming less comprehensive due to the $2,100 cap on Medicare Members' medication copays.
